Fluid Vase

Material: natural latex rubber + copper

A malleable  translucent rubber vase that can be adjusted to suit the flowers it holds.

Site visit to a ceramic recycling facility in Stoke on Trent as part of a research project into the use of waste ceramic as 'grog', an aggregate added to clay to improve its drying and shrinkage properties, and which is often sourced from virgin materials such as silica sand.

Seam Bookend

In collaboration with Eleanor Murphy

Material: sheet aluminium

Two sheets of aluminium are folded and pressed together using the industrial process of seaming, to produce a strong and slender form.

The Grogged Collection

Material: white stoneware  + recycled ceramic grogs

Waste ceramics from factories and studios are ground down and added to clay as 'grog'. Different waste streams create variation in colour and texture, from white bone china to black stoneware.

Second Series

Material: bone china

Bone china is particularly prone to warping at high temperatures, meaning a single-use 'setter' is cast along with each piece, to be placed on its rim during firing, before being discarded.

The Second Series is fired without setters, and encourages warping through variation in wall thickness. Thin, concentric forms can be either maintained or intentially distorted through the positioning of the thick area within the shape.
